It is probably not surprising that the 'eggplant' can be found in numerous shapes, sizes and colours, as throughout history it has spread across the globe and must now be one of the most widely grown vegetables. This mix is a 'potluck' from long, thin to tiny round red and green Asian varieties to large round white or purple Mediterranean types.

An Italian heirloom variety with large oval fruits up to 20cm (8in) long. The skin is a striking mix of purple and white stripes, whilst its flesh is firm and well flavoured.

Traditional, large oval to round, darkly coloured fruits with excellent flavour and texture, an essential ingredient in many Italian and Greek dishes. Best grown in a greenhouse or frame.

Produces an abundance of golf ball sized, bitter free baby fruits throughout the summer on dwarf plants 60cm (24in) high, making it ideal for growing in containers on the patio. Fruits hold their flavour, quality and colour well after picking.

Attractive, virtually spineless, dwarf plants yield an abundant crop of baby fruits, 5cm (2in) in length. These finger-length aubergines have beautiful dark-purple skins and are not at all bitter tasting.

Excellent for growing in the greenhouse or on a sunny patio in containers.

Compact, spineless plants produce a heavy crop of baby 5cm (2in) fruits that mature to bitter free, oval, 10cm (4in) fruits of a beautiful cream streaked purple colour.

Ideal for growing in a container on the patio, or in the greenhouse.
