Much loved for its fresh, delicate onion flavour. Compliments many dishes including salads and sauces. Tough plants ideal for growing on a cool windowsill.
Sowing Instructions
Sow indoors, March to April, or all year round for pots indoors. Outdoors, March to May.
Indoors, in pots or trays of moist compost. Sow thinly, cover lightly with compost. Firm gently, cover with glass, polythene or propagator lid. Keep at 15-20 degrees C (60-68 degrees F) and keep moist.
Outdoors, in the growing position. Sow thinly, cover lightly with fine soil. Firm gently and keep moist.
Care Instructions
Indoors, remove cover when seedlings appear. Thin plants to further pots or trays if necessary. To grow outdoors, stand outside for a few days late May (avoid frosts). Then transplant 20cm (8") apart in final position. To grow indoors, transplant to 15cm (6") pots of compost, place in a light airy location.
Outdoors, when large enough thin as necessary, spacing 20cm (8") apart.
Harvesting Instructions
Cut the leaves as required once the plants have developed, they are best cut before the flowers form. Allow a few plants to flower and use the pretty heads in salads.
