Things to consider when picking out your perfect garden benches & swing seat

Choosing the Material: Wooden Furniture

Show/Hide Details
Garden furniture sets come in a wide range of different materials, one of which being wood. Choosing the right wood for you, however, can depend on several factors. If you want a garden feature which shows the wood grain, then you may be influenced by colour. Oak is a popular favourite among gardeners, as it turns to a silvery colour as it ages. This can be prevented if desired with a quick varnish once a year.

Colour aside, for benches and swing sets, rigidity is key. 'Hardwoods' such as Teak or Acacia, have a very tight grain and will rarely warp over time and the tightness reduces the amount of moisture the wood soaks in. It also requires less maintenance in terms of varnishing sealants, however for the sake of maintaining a desired colour, you may still wish to apply it.

Choosing the Material: Metal Furniture

You may also wish to look at metal furniture. There are several to choose from, but the most common are cast iron and cast aluminium. Cast Iron furniture offers strength and weight, reducing the risk of it getting damaged or blown over in strong winds. It is however prone to rusting if it gets chipped or scratched.

Cast aluminium furnishings are also strong, but are also lightweight and rustproof, making them good choices for outdoor furniture. The lightweight material makes it easy to move around the garden if needed, but can make it vulnerable when faced with extreme weather conditions.

Maintenance: Furniture Protection

Whichever material you decide, we always recommend taking certain measures to get the most out of your garden furniture. With all materials, it is not recommended that customers use high pressure washers to clean their furniture, as this can strip protective coating off and make furnishings prone to rusting or rotting.

It is also a good idea to protect your furniture with a weather-proof cover. These are readily available at affordable prices, and can massively extend the life expectancy of your furniture set.
