Product Information
Sometimes called 'soup celery' as it has excellent taste and has long been an important flavouring in soups, it is especially popular in Ireland. It can be grown as a standard celery for autumn crops or as a 'trench' variety to overwinter.
Sowing Instructions
Sow Indoors, March to April. 0.5cm (0.25") deep, in trays of compost. Water well and place in a cold frame, greenhouse or on a cool windowsill. A temperature of 12-15 degrees C (55-60 degrees F) is ideal. Keep moist. Seedlings usually appear in 14-21 days. Grow on in cooler but not cold conditions. Gradually accustom young plants to outside conditions (avoid frosts), before planting out 25cm (10") apart. Plant into a prepared trench up to 30cm (12") deep. Water well. Once plants are approx 30cm (12") tall, begin to 'earth up' the plants. Draw soil up to half the plants height, continue approx every 2 weeks until all stems are covered up to the leaves. Plants can also be grown without 'earthing up' but will not over winter and the texture will be coarser but colour will be deeper.
