Product Information
An excellent forcing variety that produces lovely chicons that are so expensive to buy in the supermarket. In the autumn the plant's leaves are removed and the new tender 'chicon' is forced in the dark to produce this delicacy. Very popular in northern France, Belgium and Holland it can be eaten raw in salads or whole heads can be braised, steamed or baked 'au gratin'.
Sowing Instructions
Sow outdoors, May to July. Thinly in a seed bed, 1.5cm (0.5") deep, directly into prepared soil which has already been watered. Allow 25cm (10") between rows. Seedlings usually appear in 14-21 days. Thin out to 20cm (8") apart. Water well until plants are established. Once plants have developed good-sized heads from late summer, trim off the top of the plant leaving approx 2.5cm (1") above ground, these should then be covered with a container, such as a bucket, which completely excludes light. Alternatively dig up the roots and plant into a container in sand or dry soil and put in a dark warm place such as a garage. Harvest forced chicons when approx 20cm (8") tall. It is possible to get 2 or 3 chicons per season.
