Product Information
A favourite vegetable throughout the Caribbean. The leaves can be cooked and used in the same way as spinach and the young leaves and stems can be harvested to use in salads.
Sowing Instructions
Sow outdoors, April to August, in a prepared seed bed. Sow thinly in rows 30cm (12") apart. Cover with 0.5cm (0.25") of fine soil, firm gently and keep moist.
Sow indoors, March to August, in trays of seed compost. Sow thinly and cover with a fine layer of compost. Keep at approx 18-21 degrees C (65-70 degrees F).
Care Instructions
For outdoor sowing, when large enough thin to 7.5cm (3") apart for baby leaf or for mature plants thin to a final spacing of 20cm (8").
For indoor sowing, when large enough transplant 5cm (2") apart in trays. Stand outside for a few days late May (avoid frosts). Transplant to final position 20cm (8") apart with 30cm (12") between rows.
Harvesting Instructions
Juneto October. For baby leaves pick as required, a few from each plant. Harvest leaves and stems from the tops of mature plants to encourage further side shoots. Remove any flowers.
