Will A Cast Iron Chiminea Rust?

How to deal with a rusty chiminea

After time and use, Cast Iron Chimineas will develop surface rust, particularity if burnt at high temperatures or left uncovered in the rain. This is usually only surface rust and it will not have any affect, other than aesthetically, on the performance or integrity of your chiminea in the short term.

To delay the effects of corrosion, after use, when your chiminea is cool, simply rub your chiminea with an oily rag and cover with an appropriate rain and dust cover. It is also possible to restore the finish of your chiminea by treating it with a high temperature cover.

As the chimineas are only immediately affected by surface rust it is not essential to treat them as outlined above and these are simply recommendations to help prolong the life of your chiminea. In fact some of our customers have decided not to treat their cast iron chimineas in any way as they feel the surface rust adds character and charm to the feature.
