Will a Cast Iron Chiminea Rust?

Written on 16/10/2015 at 14:32

After time and use cast Iron chimeneas will develop surface rust, particularity if burnt at high temperatures or left uncovered in the rain. This is usually only surface rust and it will not have any affect, other than aesthetically, on the performance or integrity of your chimenea in the short term.

To delay the effects of corrosion, after use, when your chimenea is cool, simply rub your chimenea with an oily rag and cover with an appropriate rain and dust cover. It is also possible to restore the finish of your chimenea by treating it with a high temperature cover.

As the chimeneas are only immediately affected by surface rust it is not essential to treat them as outlined above and these are simply recommendations to help prolong the life of your chimenea. In fact some of our customers have decided not to treat their cast iron chimeneas in any way as they feel the surface rust adds character and charm to the feature.
