Stackable Water Butts a better choice

Felco Maintenance

The life time of the pruning shears and their performance depends on the maintenance and care given. This is summarised as follows:

1. Clean the blade with a dry cloth after each day’s pruning.
2. Oil the spring and revolving handle shaft daily (FELCO 7, FELCO 10 and FELCO 12).
3. Sharpen the blade when cutting needs more effort.
4. Adjust cutting and anvil-blade alignment when the cut is no longer clean.

Pruning Shears Sharpening

1. Hold the pruning shear flat in the left hand (photo No.1).
2. Sharpen the blade using the FELCO ceramic stone, bevelling angle 23 degrees.
3. Turn the pruning shear over to remove burring from the blade. To do this, set the ceramic stone to a sharpening angle of 5 degrees (photo No.2).

Pruning Shears Maintenance

Maintenance
Oil certain parts of the shears daily, as shown in the diagrams a), b) and c).

Change the cutting blade
When the blade no longer crosses the anvil-blade perfectly throughout its length, it is recommended to change it according to the diagrams, No 1 to 5 and 9 to 13.
Intensive use of the pruning shears causes the blade to wear. The blade must be sharp in order to be able to ‘’prune’’ with a minimum of effort and obtain clean, accurate cuts.

Change the anvil-blade
When the cutting blade has been changed several times and even when the play has been carefully aligned, the cut is still not clean, it is time to change the anvil-blade, following instructions given. Diagrams No. 1 to 4 and 6 to 13.

Change the shock-absorber and cushion
Intensive work wears out the shears’ shock-absorber. It should be changed when it is no longer flexible according to the diagrams overleaf a) and b). The user will then continue to protect his joints, wrist and hand.

Change the hardened steel centre bolt and brush
This operation is necessary when the cutting head has a lot of lateral play and cutting becomes imprecise. This happens when the pruning shears are used for several seasons under strong mechanical stresses.

Revolving handle
During periods of intensive use, the shaft of the handle must be oiled daily in order to use the shears even longer.
To remove the revolving handle, hold the shears as shown in the illustration b).
Pour a few drops of light oil onto the shaft of the handle (illustration c), then replace it by pushing it at the base.

Guarantee

FELCO tool's forged aluminium alloy handles are guaranteed to last a life time.

The guarantee covers design or manufacturing defects and is limited to the parts mentioned. Defects or damage resulting from accident, normal wear, improper use or use for a purpose other than that for which the tool has been designed, are not covered by the guarantee.

Align the pay between the cutting blade and the anvil-blade

See diagrams No. 1, 2, 10, 11, 12, and 13.

Explanation of diagrams
1. Remove the spring

2. Loosen the screw in the toothed sector holding the centre nut.

3. Unscrew the centre nut in the direction of the arrow, using the adjustment key provided with each pair of shears.

4. Remove the centre nut from the bolt and separate the handles.

5. Remove the blade from the blade holder, clean its housing and replace the new blade on the pins. Only change the pins if they are damaged.

6. Unscrew in the direction of the arrow and remove the 2 screws fastening the anvil-blade.

7. Separate the anvil-blade from the handle and clean its housing.

8. Fit the new anvil-blade after greasing the point of contact of the blade, fasten if using the 2 screws removed in point 6.

9. Reassemble the shears, inserting the centre bolt in the lower handle then set the upper handle in place and tighten the centre nut manually.

10. Tighten the centre nut in the direction of the arrows, using the adjustment key.

11. Set the alignment between the cutting blade and the anvil-blade by adjusting the tightness of the centre nut. The blade should rub against the anvil-blade along 2/3 of its length.

12. Lock the centre nut by inserting the toothed segment on top of it and lock with the segment screw.

13. Refit the spring.

Changing the Shock-Absorber

1. Disassemble the shear.

2. Tighten the blade-handle in a vice with the shock- absorber towards the top (diagram a).

Remove the defective shock-absorber using a screwdriver (diagram a).

Warning: Do not try do remove the aluminium ring.

Put the new shock-absorber in place, pinching it between two fingers then Push it completely under the ring using a small screwdriver (diagram a).

3. Change the cushion (diagram b)

4. Reassemble the shear and adjust it.
